Social Work Month 2026: "Uplift, Defend, Transform."

March is Social Work Month (yes, a whole month is necessary--social workers have a lot to celebrate!), and this year's theme is "Uplift, Defend, Transform." Three words that speak to both the daily duties of social workers as well as the broader impact of the profession.

At its core, social work is guided by six foundational values:

  • Service

  • Social justice

  • Dignity and worth of the person

  • Importance of human relationships

  • Integrity

  • Competence

These principles are not just ideals--they are commitments to personal and professional ways of being, every day.

To uplift is an act of service. It means to recognize resilience, optimize strengths, and ensure that people feel seen and heard for who they are.

To defend is to protect social justice. It means to advocate when dignity is threatened-- on individual, systemic, and societal levels.

To transform requires a combination of belief and consistency. Seeing the potential for growth and improvement, and showing up every day to make shifts in the right direction.

Social workers are champions of these ideals, and I have had the privilege of seeing firsthand in my career how transformative it can be when someone's voice is heard, their dignity is respected, and their story is honored. The values of the social work profession inform my work behind the camera every day, and I'm grateful to see the world through this lens.

The way I feel about social work month is the same way I feel about capturing images--the things that are important to us deserve a space to be seen and appreciated, no matter how small. This month gives us opportunity to celebrate the quiet parts of life that make it better, and the humans who make so many of those moments possible.

Thank you to the social workers who have taught me what I know, who I am lucky to call colleagues and friends, and who continue to show up every day in big ways ❤️
